A BIT ABOUT BLOOMIN’ ACRES
After
10 years in the big city of Dallas, we were ready for a serious lifestyle
change…we were blessed to find our bit of Heaven on earth right here in the
beautiful Arkansas Ozarks! We’ve been
on “the farm” for almost 5 years now and continue to be amazed at the direction
our lives are taking.
I’ve
always had a love of flowers and when returning to college began pursuit of a
degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design.
After over 20 credit hours, we moved to this area and I completed my
degree in business. While working full
time and traveling for my job I could never find the time to work toward my
goal of a perennial plant farm. Almost
4 years ago, Ebay came into our lives and as they say, the rest is
history….
Our
business has more than doubled each year with internet sales that continue to
amaze us. We’ve added a hot house and
converted over 1500 s.f. of an old chicken house into a greenhouse. The field work is underway and mother beds
are blooming. To date, we purchase the
majority of our plants, but plan within the next few years to sell fully
organically grown perennials that are hardy, care free and heat/drought
tolerant . Let’s face it, we all love
to garden, but we need carefree alternatives in this busy world of ours! We are conducting our first local sale this
season and hope to have “the farm” as our sight of next year’s sale. But between now and then….we’re going in
several new directions as well.
We’ve
researched numerous ways to become more self-sufficient on our farm and come up
with some exciting ideas and goals.
Hubby is raising our first batch of “pasture fed” chickens. We’re anxious to try the new fare, as all we
read says there is no comparison to store purchased birds. We’ll take orders in advance of each growing
season. The first group should be ready
around August 1st 2004 and a second batch around October 1. Be sure to order now, as we will only have a
limited supply this year. In addition
will be introducing an entirely new breed of sheep to the State of
Arkansas. Wool, yarn, fleece, horns, milk
and, of course meat (a true delicacy!) will be available within a few years. We will have the finest registered breeding
stock available and believe that these beauties will be a welcome addition to
the economic base in the area. Lambing should occur around the time of our
plant sale next spring, so plan now to bring the entire family for a trip to
the farm.
Hubby is doing a lot of late night work on our website, with many hours left to go. Please take a look and give us your feedback. If you’d like to be added to a mailing list, just drop us a line. We hope to continue the growth of our internet based business (www.bloominacresfarm.com) and have been amazed and the wonderful group of customers we have been fortunate to find on the www.
Of
course, we still work full time off the farm, so that limits the speed of our
progress, so please be patient with us as we grow. We’re excited about the direction God is sending us and hope to
share the knowledge of what we learn as we go.
We’re convinced that farm living is the life for us, and hope to enrich
the lives of others with our products and services in the years to come.
